Shhhhh. Don’t talk. Just watch. This is about as classic as it gets. From 1935 comes The Little Colonel–made at a time when it was scandalous to even show a little white child (Shirley Temple) holding hands with a black servant (the inimitable Bill Robinson). It is the first time that an interracial coupling was ever featured onscreen and was even cut from the film by some Southern states upon its’ initial release.
And yet. This is Shirley at her most organically talented (she was only SIX years old for goodness sakes), and Bojangles … well … what can you say about Bill Bojangles? He was the man. He is quite literally, in every way, awe-inspiring.
